Unit 2: Introduce yourself

Yesterday, 6 Feb 2023 was such a tiring day. I’m writing these lines at 12:37 AM on 7 Feb 2023. Gosh, I’m way too studious! Below is the content of the 2nd Unit on the Duolingo French course.

• Key phrases: Introduce yourself
  • Excuse-moi, tu parles français? (Excuse me, do you speak French?)
    • Oui, je suis français. (Yes, I am French).
  • Comment tu t’appelles? (What’s your name?)
    • Je m’appelle Julia. (My name is Julia). → Je m’applle [name].
  • Je parle espagnol. (I speak Spanish) → Je parle [language]
  • Je suis américaine. (I am Americain) → Je suis [nationality]
• Grammar
  • Verb: (-er) – I still remember a little bit from my short course 2 years ago.

Subject	Verb (manger: eat)
Je	mange
Tu	manges
Il/Elle	mange

The “s” at the end of the verb is silent, so these verbs are pronounced the same. 

• Gender

Adjectives in French are dependent on the gender of what they describe. Normally, feminine adjectives end with “e.” Besides, *I hope my memory serves me right*, “e” makes the words sound a bit different, often we can hear the final consonant of that word (?)

Example:

Gabriel est espagnol.

Sarah est espagnole.

Il est américain.

Elle est américaine.

• My own tips:
  • agno: “gn” sounds pretty like “nh” in Vietnamese. But there’s a slight distinction between them, idk how to demonstrate that dissimilarity, sorry my dear readers. 
  • Il s’applle Eddy. (His name is Eddy, but literally, it’s “He calls himself Eddy.”)
